If you’ve never been to a podiatrist before, you might be wondering what actually happens during an appointment. Will you need treatment straight away? Should you bring your usual shoes? And what exactly will the podiatrist be looking for?
There’s really nothing to worry about. Your first podiatry appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know you, understand what’s happening with your feet, and work out the best way to help you feel more comfortable, and confident, on your feet.
Here’s what you can generally expect.
We start with a conversation
Your feet can tell us a lot, but so can you!
We’ll start by talking about why you’ve come to see us and any pain, discomfort or changes you’ve noticed. We’ll also ask about your general health, medical history, medications and lifestyle.
This is important because conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and circulation problems can all affect your feet. And we need to know these things. Your work, exercise habits and how much time you spend standing or walking can also help us understand what may be contributing to your problem.

We’ll assess your feet
Next, we’ll examine your feet and ankles. What we assess will depend on why you’re visiting us.
We may look at your skin and nails, foot shape, joints and range of movement. If you’re experiencing pain, we’ll examine the affected area and look for possible causes.
For some patients, particularly those with diabetes, we may also assess circulation and sensation in the feet.
We may look at how you walk
If you’re experiencing recurring foot, ankle, knee or lower limb pain, our podiatrist may assess the way you stand and walk.
Your gait is simply the way your body moves when you’re walking or running. Small differences in the way your feet and legs move can sometimes place additional pressure on certain areas and contribute to pain or injury.
You can read more about this in What is Gait Analysis and Why is it Important?.
Bring your shoes along
Your footwear can give us some very useful clues about what’s happening with your feet.
We may look at how your shoes fit, the level of support they provide and where they’re showing signs of wear. If you have particular shoes that you wear regularly for work, walking or sport, bring them with you.
Sometimes a simple change in footwear can make a significant difference.
What about orthotics?
Not everyone who visits a podiatrist needs orthotics.
If we identify a biomechanical issue that may benefit from additional support, we’ll explain your options and whether orthotics could form part of your treatment.
Our article Do I Need Orthotics? explains when orthotics may be helpful and how they’re used.
Will I receive treatment at my first appointment?
In many cases, yes. Depending on the reason for your visit, treatment may begin during your first appointment.
This could include treating corns or calluses, managing an ingrown toenail, providing padding or strapping, addressing skin or nail concerns, or recommending exercises and stretches.
For problems involving pain, injury or biomechanics, your podiatrist may recommend a treatment plan that could include exercises, footwear changes, orthotics, activity modification or follow-up appointments.
Most importantly, we’ll explain what we’ve found and why we’re recommending a particular approach.

You don’t need to wait until foot pain becomes severe before visiting a podiatrist. In fact, early assessment can often prevent a relatively small problem from becoming something that interferes with your everyday life.
