Today over two-thirds of Australian adults are considered overweight or obese*. Our feet have been designed to carry a certain amount of weight. If this weight increases considerably, it can have a significant impact on foot health, leading to various issues such as pain and discomfort, affecting mobility and overall quality of life.
Pain and discomfort – flat feet, plantar fasciitis
One of the primary ways in which obesity affects the feet is through increased pressure and stress on the musculoskeletal system. Excess weight puts added strain on the feet, particularly the arches and heels, leading to conditions such as flat feet and plantar fasciitis. Flat feet occur when the foot rolls inwards, which looks like the arches have collapsed. This causes discomfort and can be painful, especially during weight-bearing activities like walking or standing for long periods.
Plantar fasciitis is another common condition associated with being overweight. It occurs when the plantar fascia which is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed. The added weight from obesity can exacerbate this inflammation, leading to intense heel pain that can make walking difficult.
Bunions, corns and calluses
In addition to these specific foot conditions, obesity can also contribute to a range of other foot problems. Excessive weight can increase the risk of developing bunions, corns, and calluses, as well as affecting existing foot problems such as hammertoes. These issues not only cause discomfort but can also limit mobility and make it challenging to engage in regular physical activity, further perpetuating the cycle of weight gain and foot problems.
Other health conditions
Obesity is linked to various systemic conditions that can indirectly impact foot health. Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease are more prevalent in obese individuals and can lead to complications such as neuropathy and poor circulation, which in turn increase the risk of foot ulcers and infections. These complications can be particularly concerning for people with diabetes, as foot ulcers can progress rapidly.
Addressing the impact of obesity on foot health requires a multifaceted approach. Weight management through a combination of diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes is crucial in reducing the strain on the feet and preventing associated complications. Wearing supportive footwear with adequate cushioning and arch support can also help alleviate pressure on the feet and reduce the risk of developing musculoskeletal issues.
