This year Foot Health week focuses on how your feet can give you early indications of other more serious health conditions.
At Sanders Podiatry, we have always treated the feet as the foundation of the body. Good health starts from the ground up. Your feet can tell you a lot about underlying health concerns before they show up anywhere else. From tingly feelings and numbness, to joint aches or ulcers, your feet will show you symptoms that you can attend to before they become a more serious problem.
In an article by the Australian Podiatry Association (APODA), new research shows that almost 2 out of 5 Australians (39%) had life-threatening health issues identified by their podiatrist.
The research showed Australians who had visited a podiatrist for foot pain were unexpectedly found to have other life-threatening health issues, including:
- 33% with circulatory issues
- 11% with heart problems
- 25% with diabetes
- 23% with gout
- 7% with other health issues
7 things your feet can tell you about your overall health and wellbeing
Persistently cold feet, wounds that take a long time to heal, stiff joints, pain and numbness, are all symptoms that can indicate other more serous health conditions.
In this article, we list 7 common symptoms that may indicate other underlying health issues.
The benefits of regular podiatry
If you leave foot problems untreated, they don’t tend to disappear without some help. They can also have a longer-term impact. For example, you may find yourself avoiding physical activities that you normally enjoy without even realising, which impacts your health and fitness levels.
Many foot problems can be fixed with the help of a podiatrist. If you have any of the following symptoms, please contact us and make an appointment:
- Pain in the arches, heel or forefoot
- Pain in your legs, knees, hips or lower back
- Numbness or tingling sensations
- Infections around your toenails or under your feet
- Corns and calluses developing
- Toenails look thick or mis-shaped
- If you are finding walking or standing uncomfortable
- Leg or foot pain during sport
Read on about the benefits of regular podiatry and why it makes good long-term sense to see a podiatrist every few months.
